Queen Anne era period cottage

Our client lives in a Queen Anne era period cottage in a serene Hampshire village and wanted a kitchen that would blend perfectly into the traditional surroundings whilst providing all the conveniences of modern living.

The kitchen is approximately 2.7m by 2.6 m and we needed to make room for an AGA, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, traditional country sink and tap, as well as creating maximum storage and worktop space for our client.

She chose traditional shaker style cabinets in a serene pale green finish with nickel cup style handles and a pale quartz worktop. All wall units were built to ceiling height to maximise storage and avoid wasted space and dirt traps.

Small bespoke traditional kitchen
I moved into a very old cottage and wanted a new kitchen which complemented the rest of the house. It’s a small kitchen area so wasn’t sure I was going to achieve what I was hoping for. Well Dowers Kitchens certainly did and more. It is absolutely beautiful and such a pleasure to work in. Guy was so very helpful and I was able to choose exactly what I wanted. The craftsmanship is fabulous and Guy and his team were brilliant.

About the project

small bespoke handmade kitchen

Opening out the room

A bespoke kitchen allows you to create custom units that cleverly open out a small room. On the left-hand side you can see shallower units and an open corner shelf to give access to the room, whilst achieving the continuity of the country style kitchen across all four kitchen walls. And of course, create additional worktop and storage. Designing the shallow units meant we could include an integrated dishwasher with easy access.
handmade integrated fridge freezer door

Hidden fridge freezer

In a small kitchen, a fridge freezer can easily take over, but with our integrated separate doors, the kitchen retains its charm without compromising on functionality.

Statement AGA

Traditional meets modern with this statement lilac AGA sitting at the centre of the kitchen. We made sure there was plenty of worktop space around it so our client can enjoy cooking up a feast.

Scaled down sink

The butler style sink was a critical requirement of our client, to complete the country feel, but with space at a premium, we specially sourced a smaller design sink. This gave our client a substantial amount of work area. We designed the worktop to run into the window reveal, effectively giving even more space. By adding in drainer grooves into the quartz worktop, the whole sink area keeps the clean lines and open feel. To maximise light, our electrical subcontractor installed LED undercounter lighting. A shelf above the window, frames the picturesque view outside and completes the country cottage feel.
drawer dishwasher

A dishwasher no bigger than a drawer

Hidden behind one of our panels is the cleverly designed Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer™ Dishwasher. These innovative dishwashers are very popular for smaller kitchens and integrate beautifully into any kitchen space. We’ve built a pan drawer underneath, so the dishwasher is conveniently positioned at bench height for ease of loading and minimal bending.
integrated washing machine panel

Creating an illusion

The washing machine is hidden away behind an integrated panel, which fits onto the machine. Rather than a standard washing machine panel that breaks up the lines of the kitchen, we have created a front that look like separate cupboard and drawers to match the units around it. To complete the illusion, you can see the false hinges on the left of the door.

A statement floral splashback

Our client, who was a florist, choose the lavender splashback to match the colours of the AGA and compliment the country style of the kitchen. A great spot to enjoy the kitchen while keeping an eye on the neighbours!

A cottage fit for a Dowers Bespoke Kitchen!

The kitchen sits on the left of the property. You can appreciate the history and tranquility of our client’s home and hopefully understand why she chose Dowers to build a kitchen that would enhance her home and fit in effortlessly.

A new kitchen for a converted barn

West Meon, Hampshire

“Guy Cheeseman and his team at Dowers made a superb job of our farmhouse style kitchen, which we have been extremely pleased with.
From planning, which Guy was mainly responsible for, through to completion was very straightforward and, despite working in a converted barn where there are no such things as exact right angles etc. those obstacles were overcome with the minimum of fuss.”
